More Than Half of Wine Consumption Is Now Whites & Rose

More Than Half of Wine Consumption Is Now Whites & Rose

It's set to be a warm Summer ahead.

Willunga has been bathed in sunshine, our trademark windiness, and it has been notably dry.

It pays to be picnic-ready in these El Nino years, with crisp white wine waiting in the fridge for the temperature to sneak into summer territory.

We grab cheese, dried pears, fig paste, seeded crackers, a board game and a bottle of wine from the fridge. Plumm outdoor glasses of course, too, and juice for the kids. Backyard  (or Aphelion Cellar Door!) picnics for the win!

To inspire you to make the most of these summery moments, below I share five of our finest white wines. Plus a worthy pink interloper.

After all, whites and rosé now account for more than half of all global wine consumption! (Source: Decanter)

Welkin Sparkling Chenin Blanc

As huge fans of French Sparkling Chenin (Vouvray), we set out to make our own version.
I permanently keep a bottle in the fridge and enjoy a glass while I cook dinner (and Rob wrangles the kids into the bath!). My nibble match de jour is coated peanuts, sesame and BBQ is my current box.

Welkin Clairette

We named our Cherub in 2017 after this noble grape, one of the 13 permissible varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Like our darling (who starts school next week!) this is an astonishingly pretty wine.
Hand-picked and whole bunch pressed, we've created a wine of delicacy and crystalline purity.
I love a glass with our favourite spreadable goat curd, and a cuddle with my big girl while she reads me a story.

Callow Grenache Blanc

The "other" Grenache, it's white wine form.
Attracting acclaim from critics, cellar door visitors - and me!
Crisp, bright, nashi pear and spice with a textural mouthfeel.

Welkin Chenin Blanc

Adelaide Hills grown fruit gives apples, Nashi pear, and hints of almond in this fresh and juicy take on Chenin Blanc. There are florals here, and juicy acidity. Also some complexity and texture thanks to some time on lees.

Pir Chenin Blanc

A Trophy winning wonder. Spectactular with food. Sublime sipped by itself. Restaurants purchase the lion's share of our Pir production, and it's easy to see why. Red apple, white peach and flint aromas. Rounded texture from time on lees. Crisp acid profile. Balance, concentration and length of flavour.

Special Mention:

Welkin Rosé

True, its not a white wine, but the Welkin Rosé is so special that it deserved mention here amongst our chilled, Spring weather wines.
A grown up Rosé, elegant, savoury, with a strawberry-and-cream nose to boot.

Rush for Rosé

We hope you enjoy our range of white and rosé wines, just as much as our stable of Grenache and other red wines.
