What's In A Name

What's In A Name

How Aphelion Found It's Moniker

Surprisingly to some, a whole lot of deliberation, research and experimentation went into choosing a name for our fledgling wine brand.

However Rob Mack is known for his meticulous planning and deep thinking, so it should have been no surprise! (catch a glimpse into Rob's mind here).

To uncover the thought process - and hilarious rejected options - I have to take you back.

Way back in time.

To 2014.

Wine: Tick. Name: Not So Much.

Marsh Brini had sold us our first tonne of old bush vine Blewitt Springs Grenache. From that we made four different wines (read more about that first vintage here)

Each precious bottle was bottled by hand.

Now we needed a name, and labels.

To market, to market, I need a fine coat!

The pressure was on.

Where do you even start?

We battled with trying to mash our names together - Loubert and Robise. Nope, not good.

Places of importance to us both were listed and rejected one by one:

Nozawa - No Japanese influence to our winemaking. (The skiing is epic though!)

Willunga - Beaten by our mates at Willunga 100!

Lightning Bolt Moment

Rob came to me one afternoon and asked, rather nonchalantly,

“What about Aphelion?”

YES! That was absolutely it.

I asked Rob the meaning - Ancient Greek for “From the Sun”. Perfectly apt.

The name fit like a glove.

Over The Years There Were More Names

Our range grew. We now have three ranges of wines, with a host of beautiful names. That is a story for another day!

What has been a lightning bolt moment for you?
